  • Your Brain’s Memory Capacity

NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback for TBIA recent PsyBlog article addresses the question of the size of the brain’s memory capacity. Based on recent research, the article suggests that Human Brain Capacity is Ten Times More than Previously Thought.

Terrence Sejnowski of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies says that your brain “could hold as much information as the entire Internet.” If you stop and think about that, well…

This puts the brain’s capacity in the petabyte range. A petabyte is equal to 1,000 terabytes or 1,000,000 gigabytes. Pretty impressive.

The research is a joint project of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, United States; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, United States; The University of Texas at Austin, United States; University of California, San Diego, United States. Professsor Sejnowski says that they have “discovered the key to unlocking the design principle for how hippocampal neurons function with low energy but high computation power.” How much electricity does it take to power the Internet?

For more detailed information, read the study titled, Nanoconnectomic upper bound on the variability of synaptic plasticity. I know, that title is pretty overwhelming for most of us. So, what do they say in regular English? Here’s how I understand it (with the help of the PsyBlog article):

Much of the brain’s processing happens at the synapses. Advanced microscopy has revealed that NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback for TBIsynapses have around 26 sizes, not just one to ten sizes as previously thought. This additional variety in size allows for much more precise processing.

What does this mean for NeurOptimal®?

All this capacity is what you bring to your neurofeedback training. This research helps to explain what I and other NeurOptimal® trainers worldwide see in our offices every day: The amazing ability of the brain  to take in information and use it to optimize itself. With NeurOptimal® we are giving the brain information it doesn’t get anywhere else about what it is doing moment to moment. Clearly, you are in no danger of running out of storage space for that new and valuable information.
